Royal intervention: King Charles purchases The Old Mill to protect Camilla’s privacy and security

Since acquiring the countryside mansion in 1995 following her divorce, Queen Camilla has frequently visited to spend quality time with her family

King Charles has bought the house next door to his wife’s country retreat for a reported £3million over fears it would be turned into a wedding venue.

Queen Camilla purchased Ray Mill House in Wiltshire in 1995, which she still uses today to spend time with her family. The monarch stepped in to buy the neighbouring property, the Old Mill, following concerns about the sale.

It was developed by the previous owner Phil Clayton over the years to turn the former garage into a holiday apartment known as Pear Tree Loft. It was last sold in 2017 for £675,000.

Clayton was granted permission by the council in February 2022 to turn the outbuilding into a holiday let. The one-bed apartment is listed in Booking.com and Airbnb for £157 a night. The Mail on Sunday reports that a buyer was seeking to "maximise commercial use of the property as a short-term holiday rental and wedding venue".

The house was listed for £1.25million and comes with four bedrooms, two en-suite bathrooms, a large room, two other bathrooms, three reception rooms, a kitchen and a cloakroom.

The monarch is said to have used private funds to acquire the Old Mill, which shares a private lane to Queen Camilla’s country mansion.

A royal source told The Mail on Sunday: "The new arrangement is a pragmatic solution, being both a sound financial investment and a way of maintaining Her Majesty’s privacy, protection and continued enjoyment of her much-loved home, without any public funds being used.

"I know how grateful and relieved she is, not least given all the additional stresses and anxieties of the past year." The Queen bought the house after her divorce from her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles.
