French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin announced that several French prisons were attacked overnight.
He made the statement on Tuesday, April 15, according to Reuters.
According to Darmanin, there were attempts to intimidate prison staff, ranging from arson attacks on vehicles to shootings with automatic weapons.
“I am heading to Toulon to support the officers involved. The French Republic is facing the challenge of drug trafficking and is taking action to dismantle criminal networks on a large scale,” he added.
According to Le Parisien, around 1:00 a.m., the entrance to the prison in Toulon came under fire from automatic weapons. The shooters were inside a vehicle with several individuals, and they fled the scene.

In Valence, two cars belonging to prison staff were set on fire in a parking lot. A similar incident occurred in Marseille.
Two vehicles were burned, and nine others were covered with stickers bearing the inscription “DDPF,” which stands for “Rights of French Prisoners.”
On January 6, Darmanin expressed his dissatisfaction with the measures being taken to combat drug trafficking.
At the time, the minister also emphasized the difficulty of dealing with mobile phones in prisons — more than 40,000 were confiscated in 2024 alone.
