The president’s actions have been condemned by many
Already standing out from the crowd in his blue suit, Donald Trump has attracted yet more scorn over his behaviour at Pope Francis’ funeral.
The US President was slammed this morning for his outfit choice. He was pictured alongside dozens of world leaders, and his wife Melania, dressed traditionally in black for the occasion.
But it’s not just Mr Trump’s sartorial choices that have landed the president in hot water.
During the service in Rome, Mr Trump was seen playing with his mobile phone and chewing gun, the Mirror reports.
One unimpressed person said online: "Total disgrace. Selfinvite. Blue suit. Hating the pope and now attending his funeral.
"Pretending to be a (very recent) super Christian but having no morals and don’t know what easter is about. And signalling during the service. Total embarrassment."
Another person added: "Such a douchebag. Wearing blue, not black. On his phone at the Pope’s funeral. I’m an atheist, but even I show respect for the dead. What a f*****g s**show."
Another said: "Texting from the front row at a funeral...the ultimate disrespect and rudeness from the President of America." A later video shared from the scene showed the president popping a stick of chewing gum into his mouth, in full view of the world’s media.
Mr Trump had already upset many people with his remarks made before the funeral, as he claimed he only made the trip due to Catholic voters.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One before the funeral, Mr Trump said: “I just thought it was out of respect.
"I won the Catholic vote and I think that’s the first time that’s ever happened where a Republican won the vote, but I won it by a lot. I have a great relationship with the Catholics, very simple.
"But I won the Catholic vote, 56% of the vote. I don’t know why we didn’t get more actually. But we did well with the Catholic vote. My relationship is very good therefore I think it’s appropriate [that I attend the funeral]."

One person responded online: “DJT attending Pope Francis’ funeral not to honor the Pope but, because of his slight majority from Catholic voters and, yet again, he’s surprised he didn’t win a greater majority. It’s all about him.”
Proceedings began at 10am local time (9am BST) with the service taking place at St Peter’s Basilica before a procession moves his body to St Mary Major, a basilica in central Rome the late Pontiff visited frequently during his life.
He has requested to be buried in a tomb inside the basilica - which while grand is markedly smaller than the grottoes beneath St Peter’s where 91 of his predecessors are buried - while his friends watch on.
In line with his wishes, the Pope will be buried in a simple wooden coffin, abandoning the traditional triple-casket arrangement.
