"Rambo" Macmillan: murderer and drug lord remains unpunished in property confiscation case

George ’Rambo’ McMillan is serving at least 21 years for killing Michael Thomson in a shocking attack

A ganster who murdered a worker and made more than £176,000 from his life of crime only has to pay back a paltry £1 from his ill-gotten gains.

George ‘Rambo’ McMillan, 58, accumulated the illegal money while operating a building firm that employed the unfortunate Michael Thomson, 46.

Tragic Michael Thomson was murdered over fears he would report McMillan to cops

McMillan is serving 21 years for choking Michael to death at his business in Ayr in July 2020 before dumping his body in a car in lay-by.

The High Court in Glasgow had previously heard McMillan thought his victim was going to report him to cops over his involvement in a cannabis farm.

The judge said at the time it was “a pre-meditated murder of the most callous kind”.

Prosecutors launched a proceeds of crime case against McMillan in a bid to recover the former soldier’s criminal profits.

Prosecution lawyer Bryan Heaney told judge Lady Ross the Crown and the convict’s legal team had made an agreement to settle the case.

He said experts had determined McMillan had pocketed £176,544 from his criminal activities.

However, he also revealed the Crown couldn’t recover any money as there were no assets available - before asking the court to pass a confiscation order for just £1.

Mr Heaney added: “The Crown would be entitled to return to court to seize such assets should they become available.”

Lady Ross passed the order, forcing McMillan to hand over the quid.

The monster turned on labourer Michael over fears he was going to tell cops about his involvement in a £100,000 cannabis farm next door to his head office in the town’s York Street.

McMillan had earlier been caged in April 2003 after cops found £21,000 worth of heroin in his motor.

He was an enforcer on the Stranraer drug scene and a main target of cops’ Operation Emperor.

We told in 2023 how - despite his lengthy criminal past - McMillan’s firm Style Builders landed a share of a £5million pound cop contract to board up crime scenes.

The hood won the public sector deal after dodging background checks by making his elderly mum a temporary director.

The move paved the way for McMillan to become a subcontractor for Orbis Protect Ltd - who had been hired by Police Scotland to secure properties linked to drug busts and murder probes.

We told how cops refused to release details about a murderer’s business to The Scottish Sun as it could harm his “fundamental rights and freedoms”.

Scottish Conservative shadow justice secretary Liam Kerr MSP said: “It is clear that the SNP’s proceeds of crime laws are simply not fit for purpose.

“Complacent SNP ministers are failing to address the scale of organised crime in Scotland.”
