Customer stabbed to death inside Lloyds Bank branch in central Derby — murder investigation underway

Derbyshire Police reported that the man was fatally stabbed in a city center bank in Derby today, prompting a murder investigation and a significant police presence in the city

A man has been stabbed to death at a city centre Lloyds Bank, sparking a murder investigation.

The victim, who was a customer, was assaulted inside the bank in St Peter’s Street, Derby, at about 2:35pm today. The man, understood to be in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene. While formal identification has not taken place, his family have been made aware. A Derbyshire Constabulary spokesperson said: "A significant police presence remains in the city centre and will do for some time to come." The street was cordoned off by officers as well as the nearby East Street.

Derbyshire police later announced two men, aged in their 40s and 30s, were arrested at a property in Western Road, Normanton at about 6pm. The man in his 40s was charged on suspicion of murder and the second on suspicion of assisting an offender. Both remain in police custody.

Detective Inspector Tony Owen, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit, who is leading the investigation, said: “We appreciate that this incident will have caused significant concern to the local community and we’d like to thank them for their patience and understanding.

"No-one else was hurt and while the investigation is at an early stage, at this time we are treating it as an isolated incident. Officers will be in the area for some time so we’d encourage anyone with any concerns to please speak to us. We’d also encourage anyone with any information on this incident to please contact us as a matter of urgency."

An air ambulance was seen landing close to Derby Cathedral after police were alerted to the attack in the bank branch. Members of the public were asked to avoid the area this evening.

Traffic congestion was seen affecting movement into and out of Derby. The AA’s live traffic map showed delays around the centre of Derby around rush hour.

Images taken at the scene show police standing in the cordoned off street with ambulances being spotted close to the bank. People were also seen hanging around the scene on Peter’s Street despite having been told to stay away.
