UK high streets suffer as Morrisons, Poundland, and Homebase reveal widespread closures

If you've been walking along UK high streets recently, you probably have noticed a wave of shop closures and empty units.

Shoppers across the country are experiencing major changes in 2025 as three of the UK's most familiar retailers, Morrisons, Poundland, and Homebase are set to close a combined total of 201 stores this year. Morrisons, the UK's fifth-largest supermarket chain, is set to shut dozens of Morrisons Daily convenience stores and Morrisons Cafés, alongside Market Kitchens, florists, meat counters, fish counters, and pharmacies.

These closures are part of the retailer's ongoing strategy to streamline operations and adjust to changing consumer habits. Poundland, which was sold earlier this year for a symbolic £1 by Polish retail giant Pepco to US investment firm Gordon Brothers, is also closing some of its branches.

As part of a company-wide restructure, over 50 Poundland stores are expected to close by the end of 2025, with 13 more locations set to shut in October and November.

Homebase, the DIY and garden goods chain, has already closed 65 stores across the country this year after entering administration.

Last year, the company also put many stores up for sale amid financial difficulties. Its new owners, however, managed to save around 70 branches, with some sold to Sainsbury's and B&Q.

The company was bought in 2024 by CDS Superstores, which also owns Wilko and The Range.
