The British government has been examining ways to deal a blow to Russia’s funding sources amid the continuing invasion of Ukraine. It announced a ban on services related to transports of Russian liquefied natural gas to third countries.

The measure comes during a meeting of the Group of Seven foreign ministers in Canada. It says the UK will ban services like insurance and the transport of Russian LNG by British vessels.

Officials plan to introduce the new measures in stages with other European partners next year. The UK had already prohibited imports of LNG in 2023. Last month, the EU imposed additional sanctions against Russia, including a ban on imports of LNG by the end of next year.

Russia is believed to want to avoid further pressure. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said officials are ready to resume preparations for a Russia-US summit.

Lavrov said, "If and when our American colleagues renew their proposal and are ready to start preparations for the high-level meeting so that it really bears fruit, Budapest will be a preferred location for us."

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump had planned to meet in the Hungarian capital. However, the summit was canceled last month.

The Financial Times reported about the planned meeting that Russia sent a memo to the US listing hardline demands. It says that forced officials in Washington to call off the summit.

However, Lavrov said the report contained many instances of false information. He claimed the memo was meant to remind the US side of what had been discussed and agreed upon by the leaders during their meeting in Alaska in August.
