IT can be hard to tell immediately if a mattress is right for you, but after five years after first writing my Brook and Wilde Lux Mattress review, it still ticks all the boxes.

Brook and Wilde Lux mattress review: quick summary
Overall we were totally impressed with the Lux mattress. Our first thoughts that the mattress might prove too soft were unfounded – it’s comfortable, but it’s also supportive and does a brilliant job, so much so that we didn’t want to get up in the morning.
Brook and Wilde’s customer service is also first class and the fact the delivery men removed all the packaging and installed the mattress was much appreciated.
Spoiler alert, we're still using our mattress after more than five years, so it must be good!

How much does the Brook and Wilde Lux cost?
The Lux starts from £699 for a single, rising to £1,099 for a super king.
When you look at the website, you'll see you can select from four mattresses: the Lux, Elite, Ultima and Perla. When we chose our mattress, it was available in firm, medium and soft. However, the different options don't appear to be offered on the Lux now, though they are still available with the other three styles.
We opted for the king-sized Lux mattress in medium firmness as we gambled that medium would be a people pleaser.
If you bought the same mattress today, it would set you back £999, which is at the upper end of what you'll pay for a mattress, but not a million miles away from what you’d spend elsewhere. At Eve their hybrid original mattress in king size costs £849 and at Emma their hybrid premium mattress in king size is usually £1,299, though it currently has 55% off.
Brook and Wilde pitches itself as Britain’s ‘most premium’ mattress brand and offers similar promises to those made by its rivals - a 200 night comfort trial, optional mattress recycling and free shipping.

Unboxing and first impressions
Brook and Wilde’s premium delivery is free, which means two delivery people carried the mattress all the way into our bedroom and removed all the packaging for us, which we thought was a nice touch.
Of course, you’d expect them to get the delivery of a mattress for a review bang on.
But having checked out the various online customer reviews for Brook and Wilde, it looks like the company really prides itself on customer service, and you’d be hard pushed to find someone who’ll say anything negative about the customer experience, or indeed, the mattresses in general.

After giving the mattress a few hours to expand after unfurling it from its vac-packed state, we were ready to go.
Our first impression of the mattress was that it was pretty spongy for a medium. We quickly sank a couple of inches down in the foam when we lay down and we wondered if you’d ever escape the soft version.
Performance, features and design
The lux mattress contains two separate layers of memory foam sandwiching two layers of pocket springs, which means there’s plenty of give when you lie on it.
But despite the surprising softness, the mattress is very comfortable.
The way it’s constructed means it feels spongy to lie on, but also feels supportive and after a couple of months of testing, we can confirm it didn't throw our backs out.
The only complaint we had about the mattress was that it made the morning alarm particularly unpleasant because we were in such a deep sleep.

A couple of notes we’d give anyone thinking of investing in this one: if you’re a hot sleeper, you might want to think about getting the firm mattress, as sinking into the softer models can add a couple of degrees to your body temperature.
Although that could be said about foam mattresses in general if you’re only used to standard spring mattresses.
The other note is to be prepared for a whiff of plastic packaging for a week or so after unwrapping the mattress.
It’s not the worst thing in the world and it does dissipate eventually, but worth considering if you’ve got a particularly sensitive nose.
Apart from that, we had no complaints about the delivery or the mattress itself.

Brook and Wilde Lux mattress review: The verdict
If you’re buying for the long haul (remember that 10-year guarantee) Brook and Wilde is a safe pair of hands. You can of course buy cheaper options elsewhere, but it's worth bearing in mind, you get what you pay for, and the Lux mattress is a comparable price to others of the same quality.
However if you're hesitating because of the price then we reckon if you bought it on Black Friday or in the sales you could easily get a couple of hundred pounds off the price.
The 200-night trial also means that if you do decide the mattress isn't for you, it's a simple process to return it and replace it with a different model.
Overall we love the Lux. It's so amazing to have a proper mattress to sleep on after years of back breaking cheap versions – and we're still sleeping like babies on it more than two years later.
