From 'civilisation will perish' to truce as Trump halts strikes on Iran

Donald Trump announced he will pause attacks on Iran for two weeks just hours after threatening that ‘whole civilization will die.’

Trump has hailed today’s ceasefire agreement as a ‘big day for world peace’ after Tehran said it will allow the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

The US president said on Truth Social this morning: ‘Iran wants it to happen, they’ve had enough! Likewise, so has everyone else! The United States of America will be helping with the traffic buildup in the Strait of Hormuz.

‘There will be lots of positive action! Big money will be made. Iran can start the reconstruction process.’An explosion erupts following strikes near Azadi Tower close to Mehrabad International Airport in Tehran on March 7, 2026. The United States and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, sparking swift retaliation by the Islamic republic which responded with missile attacks across the region. He added this ‘could be the golden age of the Middle East.’

However, it said that the war was not over.

The ceasefire marks a U-turn from the US president after he appeared to break the previous deadline he had given to Tehran by launching airstrikes on Kharg Island yesterday, Iran’s main oil export terminal.

He appeared unconcerned that the attacks on civilian infrastructure like railways and bridges could constitute a war crime.

The United States President Donald Trump holds a Press Conference in the James S. Brady Press Briefing Room at the White House on April 6, 2026 in Washington DC.

‘You know the war crime? The war crime is allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon.’

Meanwhile on the streets of Tehran, pro-government protests took place following the ceasefire announcement.
