On April 13, the video game platform Roblox announced it will create customized accounts for young users to enhance online safety, as it faces intense global scrutiny over child endangerment concerns.
Through the company’s age verification system or parental consent, Roblox will assign users aged five to eight to Roblox Kids accounts, and users aged nine to 15 to Roblox Select accounts. The accounts will be introduced in early June.
"We will also implement new content standard requirements to determine what content or games can appear in both the Roblox Kids account and the Roblox Select account," Roblox chief safety officer Matt Kaufman stated in a press briefing.
In recent years, Roblox has faced significant criticism from governments worldwide for allegedly failing to protect children from sexual predators and exploitation.
Games appearing in Roblox Kids accounts will be restricted based on maturity levels and must undergo a "rigorous three-step review process" with strict qualifications for the creators, Mr. Kaufman explained.

The chat feature is disabled by default for Roblox Kids accounts but is gradually enabled for Roblox Select accounts based on age.
As part of the three-step review process, Roblox requires developers to verify their IDs, activate two-factor authentication, and maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription.
On April 10, Roblox announced it will launch the subscription plan for its users on April 30, costing US$4.99 (S$6.40) per month, which will include discounts on in-game items and avatars, as well as platform benefits.
