British fighter jets were called into action today due to concerns that a Russian long-range bomber was approaching UK airspace.
Following the tracking of the unidentified aircraft, two RAF Typhoons and a Voyager refueling jet were deployed, heading towards Shetland.
The Typhoons took off from RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland and the refuelling jet took off from RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.
Putin’s warplane stayed outside of British airspace and did not have to be intercepted by the jets.
The Typhoons have now returned to base.
Putin accused of surrounding himself with same 'actors' at series of events
Defence sources told that Britain’s involvement in tracking the aircraft was part of a wider response by Nato allies.
It comes after the Kremlin sent a warship to escort two sanctioned tankers through the English Channel.
