Suspected 'crime boss' Daniel Kinahan arrested in Dubai after warrant issued by Irish courts

Alleged Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan has been arrested in Dubai.

The 48-year-old, from Dublin, was detained in the UAE on Wednesday on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the Irish courts.

Irish police stated they were aware of the arrest of a man in his late 40s, due to a warrant issued by the courts relating to alleged serious organized crime offenses.

Dubai Police reported the arrest occurred on April 15. Kinahan has been identified in the Irish courts as the leader of one of Europe’s most prominent drug gangs.

Kinahan is suspected to be the leader of the Kinahan crime group.

A garda statement noted the arrest of Daniel Kinahan was an "important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement cooperation in tackling transnational organized crime".

It read: "The arrest of the Irish national in Dubai remains a matter for the authorities in the United Arab Emirates at this time.

"An Garda Siochana has been steadfast in our determination to pursue those allegedly involved in serious organized criminal activity, wherever they go.

"Today’s arrest is another extremely important demonstration of the need for international law enforcement cooperation in tackling transnational organized crime.

"An Garda Siochana has developed many major international partnerships in our efforts to target transnational organized crime groups.

Kinahan was arrested in the UAE.

"Our relationship with the authorities in the United Arab Emirates, the Ministry of Justice at judicial level, and on a police-to-police basis, is valued.

"This relationship has been supported by the Irish Government Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration and Department of Foreign Affairs."

The High Court in Dublin has previously named Kinahan, who resides in the UAE, as a senior figure in an organized crime gang involved in international drug trafficking operations and firearm offenses.

The Kinahan cartel was involved in a feud with the rival Hutch crime gang in Ireland, which began in 2015.

The following year, an attempt was made on Daniel Kinahan’s life at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in Dublin.

A reward of $5 million each for information leading to the financial disruption of the Kinahan group or their arrests and/or convictions has been in place by the American government since 2022.

Dubai Police announced they had arrested an "Irish fugitive for his alleged role in an international organized crime network".

A spokesperson stated: "Dubai police, in collaboration with the UAE Ministry of Interior, have arrested an Irish fugitive for his alleged role in an international organized crime network.

"The arrest comes as part of efforts to combat cross-border crime. The arrest followed the receipt of a judicial file from Irish authorities detailing the suspect’s alleged crimes and his involvement in an international criminal organization.

"Based on the file, Dubai public prosecution issued an arrest warrant to initiate legal procedures ahead of his extradition."
