The damning statistics, which show millions of victims are being denied justice, led to MPs accusing the Government of being “asleep at the wheel” on tackling crime.

In all, 1.47million criminal cases were closed by police without a suspect being identified between January and September 2022.

That equates to 5,378 offences going unsolved daily in England and Wales.

Last year, the police watchdog warned that most victims of burglary, robbery and theft were not getting justice.

Lib Dem home affairs chief Alistair Carmichael, who commissioned the latest research, said communities were “paying the price” of government failure.

Calling for a return to community policing, he said: “Victims will be outraged that the Government is asleep at the wheel.”

The Met Police — England’s biggest force — was the worst offender, citing 227,000 investigations during the first nine months of 2022 without nailing a suspect.

West Midlands was next on 110,720, followed by Gtr Manchester on 103,700 and West Yorks on 90,734.

The Home Office said: “The Crime Survey shows total crime in the year to September 2022 decreased by ten per cent compared with the pre-pandemic year to March 2020, and theft decreased by 20 per cent.”
