Nearly half of women’s refuges across the country are funded by donations and volunteer work because they haven’t got the cash to keep them going.

He added: “We have got to get the basics in place when it comes to violence against women and girls.
“That does involve funding, it does involve making sure that the support is there.
“There’s a lot that also needs to be done.”
