A new mum who was the first one in her friendship group to have a baby says she was very happy indeed with the male midwife she was assigned after she went into labour early. According to the mum-of-one, the midwife was 'honestly great', remaining 'calm' and 'compassionate' throughout the birth, while making sure to keep her as calm as possible too.

Her husband also took to the midwife, who took the time to joke with him and make him feel at ease. Overall, the couple was very happy with their birthing experience and felt very grateful indeed to their midwife. Therefore, when the time came for one of her pals to give birth, he felt like the natural recommendation.

According to the new mother, she currently has three friends who are pregnant and they recently got together as a group to celebrate her new arrival.

Taking to Reddit, where she goes by the username u/Aitamidwife, the unnamed woman wrote: "On this occasion, I talked a lot about my experience with my friends who all were very curious about it. I also praised my midwife a lot.

"The thing is, I never talked about the midwife being male as there isn't really a distinction between male and female midwives in my language and I also wasn't paying attention as I was excited and talked about the birth, gushing over my baby in between.

"I recommended the midwife as in our country midwives do their service at hospitals but often also offer their services pre and post-birth as well. A friend of mine asked for the mailing address."

Her friend scheduled an appointment with the midwife to discuss her own delivery, but only realised he was male once she and her husband arrived. She was livid, and 'blew up' at the mum for even suggesting him, stating that, had she known, 'she would have ruled him out right away and wouldn't have even made an appointment'.

To make matters worse, this mix-up has caused difficulties between her friend and her husband, who was himself 'elated' after meeting the midwife, believing him to be everything they were looking for. He was therefore left 'floored' when she confessed she didn't want him, and wasn't happy when she told him the reason.

Reaching out to fellow Reddit users for their thoughts on the matter, the mum continued: "He called her sexist afterward. She then called our friends who are also expecting and they sided with her husband."

One person advised: "Your recommendation was based on your experience. Your friend has every right to have a midwife she's comfortable with. However, she has no right to blow up at you."

Another commented: "There's nothing wrong or sexist about a woman not wanting a male doctor for this. It's a very intimate affair in which the comfort of the expecting mother is very important. What isn't okay is her blowing up like that."
