A killer known as the 'Moonlight Murderer' is set to be freed from jail after it was deemed he is 'no longer interested in women'.

Klaus Braunig, now 78, has spent half a century behind bars after stabbing a doctor and her teenage daughter to death in their homes in the western German city of Mainz, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Braunig initially admitted to killing the mother and daughter but then later went back on his confession.

He was subsequently found guilty of the murder of paediatrician Dr Margot Geimer, 49, and her 17-year-old daughter Dorothee, receiving a life sentence.

Now, his release could come to fruition thanks to German judges believing that his old age means he is not longer interested in women.

After being jailed at the age of 26, Braunig has made 12 applications for parole but each time his plea for release has been rejected by the District Court and Higher Regional Court in Koblenz.

However, he now looks set to be released after Germany's Federal Constitutional Court agreed that his libido has likely decreased owing to his old age.

A spokesperson told local media: "The resolutions will be rescinded and the matter will be referred back to the Koblenz district court for a new decision."

The authorities have said that they are now looking at his case to see if "an accompanying and controlling structure through probation conditions" can be set up, reports the Daily Star.

In 1991, Braunig was moved to a less secure prison but was moved back after he was found in possession of pornography, lingerie, and adhesive tape.

Braunig was reportedly known for his openly perverted behaviour towards women.

There has been longstanding controversy over his lengthy sentencing ever since it became public knowledge that he had a very low IQ of just 75.

A person with score of 70 is considered to be 'borderline impaired', with some believing that Braunig had diminished responsibility for his crimes.
