FAMILIES are ditching Easter celebrations in their droves this year — because they cannot afford them.

More than a third will not do anything to mark the bank holiday weekend, a poll shows.

And nearly a quarter are blaming the soaring cost of booze, roasting joints and chocolate.

More than two fifths said the cost- of-living crisis will limit their festivities — with the country set to spend £221million less than last year.

Most are opting to do free activities such as a walk in the park or an Easter egg hunt.

More than a quarter plan to go to the cinema.

Four in ten will have a meal at home on Easter Sunday while more than a third will visit loved ones.

Just one in 12 plans to splash out on a pub or restaurant meal, the poll of 2,880 people by website TopCashback showed.

Many are scaling back on Easter gifts such as flowers and cards. But almost all will still treat the children to chocolate eggs.

TopCashback UK director Adam Bullock said: “Easter has always been about spending quality time as a family.

"It’s disheartening to know that the cost-of-living crisis is having such a profound impact on people, some of whom are forced to give it up.

“I hope that most families will still be able to come together and enjoy some of the free and budget-friendly activities on offer.”
