Ryan Reynolds will give Ben Foster a personal call to congratulate the former Manchester United goalkeeper on his move to Wrexham.

Foster, 39, has come out of retirement to help the National League leaders achieve promotion to League Two. The former Premier League stopper has signed a short-term contract with Wrexham, who are owned by Hollywood stars Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The veteran goalkeeper has not played professional football since Watford's relegation from the Premier League last season but insists his comeback has nothing to do with money. It is believed Foster was a target for both Newcastle and Tottenham earlier this term.

The England international told his Fozcast podcast, "I don’t need much [money] - to be honest, the negotiations took about five minutes... Wages wise, it’s literally peanuts... the part for me is getting the team over the line and getting them promoted."

Foster is looking forward to meeting Reynolds, as he is a big fan of the actor's work. He added, "Apparently Ryan is going to give me a call later today! Van Wilder is one of my favourite films! Buzzing to talk to him later. They are so prevalent at the football club, they are always there... it’s not like a plaything, they want to be a part of it."

Foster has made more than 500 senior appearances at club level and won eight caps for England between 2007 and 2014 - one of which came at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. His previous clubs include Birmingham City, West Brom and Stoke.

During his time at Old Trafford, Foster started the victorious 2009 and 2010 League Cup finals against Tottenham and Aston Villa respectively. He completed a unique hat-trick in 2011, when Birmingham shocked Arsenal to win the same competition.

Foster's first piece of silverware at senior level was the Football League Trophy, which he lifted with Wrexham in April 2005. The goalkeeper is hoping to finish his career by winning another trophy with the Welsh club - the National League title.

Phil Parkinson's side are top of the table - three points clear of Notts County in second with a game in hand. Wrexham are a long way from winning the title - despite their good position - as they still have eight fixtures left to fulfil. Yet Foster is relishing the challenge.

He said, "I’ve gone and gotten the gloves out of the garage, I’ve blown the dust off the boots, because I’ve signed for a football team. We first heard about it from goalkeeping super-agent Richard Lee... He said ‘Ben – Wrexham, what are you thinking?

"That injury [to the first-choice goalkeeper Rob Lainton] happened on Saturday, we’re recording the podcast on the Wednesday, I’ll be going to training Monday morning."

Foster is hoping he can film his performances to produce content for his YouTube channel, which has more than one million subscribers. He added, "We can get matchday vlogs back! We’re going to need to see if we can get things like GoPros in the goal!"
