A teenager has been arrested after an elderly pedestrian was killed as he used a crossing outside a Thai restaurant.

An 18-year-old woman was detained by officers investigating the tragic man's death late on Friday evening in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

Police said that he died at the scene after being struck while using the pedestrian crossing in the town.

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said: "We are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Banbury.

"At around 10.35pm on Friday on the A361 between Horsefair and Parsons Street, there has been a collision between a red Nissan Pixo and a pedestrian.

"The collision happened on the pedestrian crossing outside of the Thai Orchid restaurant.

"The pedestrian, a man aged in his 70s and from Warwickshire, suffered serious injuries and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene."

A 19-year-old woman also received minor injuries.

The driver of the car, an 18-year-old woman from the Cherwell area of Oxfordshire, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail.

Sergeant Edward Crofts of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, based at Bicester, said: "We are conducting an investigation following this incident in which a man has sadly lost his life.

"Our inquiries are ongoing and one person has been arrested and bailed.

"We are appealing for witnesses and are particularly keen to speak to anyone who may have been driving in the area at the time of the incident and may have dash-cam footage of the incident or the moments leading up to the collision.

"Also we would ask anyone who has CCTV to check their footage and get in touch if it shows anything that may assist our investigation."

The OAP who died has not yet been named.

A post mortem examination is to be carried out on his body to establish the exact cause of his death and an inquest will be opened and adjourned by Darren Salter, the Oxfordshire Coroner.
