Tory think tank Onward polled more than 42,000 people, asking: “Generally speaking, would you say that people can be trusted or that you can’t be too careful in dealing with people?”.

Two thirds of people from Laithwaite and Marsh Green in Wigan said you can’t be too careful.

Only 27.98 per cent of people there said you can always or usually trust others, compared to 66.34 per cent saying you always or usually can’t be.

Other low trusting neighbourhoods were Bentilee and Ubberley in Stoke-on-Trent (-37.97 per cent), Grangetown in Redcar & Cleveland (-35.35 per cent) and Pendleton in Salford (-34.84 per cent).

Eccleshall in Sheffield has the highest levels of trust with 62.11 per cent of residents always or usually trusting others and 32.71 per cent saying you always or usually can’t be too careful - a net trust score of +29.39 per cent.

Runners up were Henleaze in Bristol (+29.27 per cent), Heswall in the Wirral (+28.51 per cent) and Appleton in Warrington (+28.05 per cent).

Adam Hawksbee from Onward said: “Social trust is the glue that holds communities together - and at this time of year we can see how important that is.

"Our ground-breaking new research reveals the standout neighbourhoods with the most trusting communities we should all be learning from.”
