Wrexham have been confirmed as National League champions and will play next season in League Two – as the next stage of the club’s resurgence begins.

After a 15-year wait outside the Football League, Wrexham will play League Two football next year after they clinched the National League title with a record 110 points on Saturday evening courtesy of a 3-1 victory over Boreham Wood at the Racecourse Ground.

The convincing nature of the title – they lay a genuine claim to be the best ever team to have played in the fifth tier of English football due to their points tally – and experience within their ranks suggests Wrexham are already well-equipped to make the step up.

Looking throughout the Wrexham squad and it is packed full of Football League experience; these are players – and a coaching team – who will need no introduction to this level of football and on that front, there will be few concerns over adding players based purely on their CV.

With an incredible 115 goals in 45 league outings this season, it is clear that goals are unlikely to be an issue next season. Paul Mullin has provided 36 goals while Elliot Lee and Luke Young between them added 20 assists.

Alan Shearer explained to The Athletic: “Mullin has scored goals at League Two level before, so I see no reason he would not continue this form if Wrexham earn promotion.”

Their defensive record of conceding 42 goals in 45 matches is impressive, but that is the area of their squad which may need tweaks ahead of a League Two campaign were attacking players think more decisively and make smarter movements.

One of the most obvious areas is the goalkeeping department, with Ben Foster expected to retire for the second time at the end of the campaign. Rob Lainton had a fine campaign but is aged 33, and it is likely the club will look to recruit a new shot-stopper, who has impressive distribution skills, to add competition to the existing ranks.

Wrexham’s 3-5-2 formation places great emphasis on the wing-backs and recruitment on the left flank is expected; with Jacob Mendy and Anthony Forde in the positions impressing but the squad is a little light in depth.

Another area were recruitment would be welcome is in the midfield, as just six players cover three positions and the need for a deep-lying player at the base of the trio would be most welcome. This will be no summer overhaul, but expect Wrexham to once again bolster their ranks ahead of next season.
