Comic book superheroes have been around since 1936 when Lee Falk created The Phantom, who appeared in a newspaper comic strip.
Four years later, the first female superheroes appeared: Fantomah and the Woman in Red.
Fast forward nearly 90 years and superheroes are a huge entertainment source, from the Marvel and DC universes to celebrating Superhero Day.
It’s a day to honour all heroes, both real and fictional. According to reports, the day was created by Marvel in 1995.
The company sent a team of interns to find out what the public thought about superheroes, what super powers they would have if possible and who their favourite heroes were, with surprising results.
Many of those asked said that people in their real lives were their superheroes.
So, a day to honour those who serve and protect people, fighting evil, was born.
