A woman has been charged with murder over the death of her dad at a Brooklyn, New York, flat.

The 22-year-old has also been charged with attempted murder for the stabbing of her 19-year-old sister, who remains in critical condition in hospital following the violent incident.

Nikki Secondino, who was taken into questioning and later charged, intially claimed that her dad Carlo Secondino, 61, was killed and her sister injured in a home invasion.

Police spotted inconsistencies in her story, however. For example, she claimed the apparent crooks were after the contents of a safe, despite the apartment not having one.

Carlo was pronounced dead at the scene, with neighbours witnessing the horrific aftermath.

It was initially believed two male robbers broke into the home on 17th Avenue, Brooklyn, at about 6am.

Nikki Secondino suffered slash wounds to the hands and needed treatment at hospital. Police now believe the injuries to her hand were sustained during her attack on her family.

One neighbour who didn't want to be identified told New York Daily News: "I heard like wrestling, fighting.

"I did hear the father. He pleaded to me 'Please call the cops!' ... The front of his chest right there, it was saturated in red like he was wearing a red vest."

Another neighbour described how Nikki banged on her door to try and get in.

''Oh my god! Oh my god! Open up the door!'' she recalled Nikki shouting. "I saw the blood in the hallway so I immediately closed my door and I didn't want to get involved."

"He was just like lying there. His head was facing towards the window, the kitchen window. He was face up lying on his back.

"Every time when they argue there was banging. Because the walls are just sheetrock, I would hear everything."

Another neighbour said: "Two daughters and a father, that's all I know, really. They kept to themselves, you know. I don't know much about them.

"I've been here 12 years, and they've been here just as long."

Yadira Gomez, who co-owns Mike’s Diner where Secondino worked as a deliveryman, told the New York Post: “These girls were abandoned by their mom when they were little, so he was the only one there as a mother figure and father figure.

“Everybody loved that guy here. It’s a big loss for everybody. He would work. He never said no to nothing, helped everybody.”

The investigation is ongoing.

Although overall crime is up in the city New York Police Department data shows that NYC has seen a 17 per cent drop in shootings and an over 12 per cent drop in homicides since January 2022.
