It is alleged a former pupil entered the school before three teachers, aged 59, 48, 34 were rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital, in nearby Paisley.

A 14-year-old pupil also suffered minor injuries following the alleged incident.

Worried parents said the teachers had been injured trying to break up a fight in the dining hall. One dad said: “It’s pretty crazy.”

Police and the school insisted the incident was not a stabbing and that no weapons had been used.

In a statement, Police Scotland said a 16-year-old girl had been traced in connection with the incident.

In a letter to parents, Steven Quinn, the director of children’s services assured parents that “all pupils are safe and well”.

He said: “The incident occurred this morning when a former pupil entered the school.

“Three teachers and one pupil were injured and have received appropriate medical treatment.

“I would like to make clear—contrary to what you may have heard on social media or elsewhere—no weapons were involved in the incident.

“Police Scotland were immediately called and attended the school and the individual involved has been traced.

“A police investigation is ongoing.”

He said the school was operating “as normal and that that pupils were back in class “carrying on with their normal school day”.

He said senior staff were on hand to offer support to staff and pupils.
