A RELIEVED dog laps up the attention of mountain rescuers after getting stuck on England’s highest peak.

Five-year-old Rocky had picked up an injury and refused to move after scaling the 3,209ft Scafell Pike mountain in the Lake District on Saturday evening.

But thirteen volunteers from Keswick Mountain Rescue Team scrambled to assist the five-stone Akita — a dog breed originating from the mountains of northern Japan.

Its owners had little choice but to call Cumbria Police who sent out a rescue team to help.

Pictures of the operation show Rocky in a bag strapped onto a metal stretcher as they are carried by the Keswick MRT.

Rescuers praised bemused Rocky’s “cool, calm and positively regal” attitude as he was strapped into a casualty bag and carried to safety on a stretcher.

After the 4½ hour rescue, the team said in a statement: “Despite being quite a large dog, it was a joy to carry such a relatively lightweight casualty.”

In July 2020 a nine stone St Bernard was rescued by the Wasdale MRT after it collapsed on walking down Scafell Pike.

Sixteen volunteers spent nearly five hours rescuing Daisy, who had pains in her legs and was carried off the mountain on a stretcher.
