A couple found dead in a luxury hotel in Mexico thought they had food poisoning and had been to hospital.

Abby Lutz and John Heathco went to the hospital just days before they were found dead inside their hotel room in the Baj Peninsula, Mexico.

Abby, 28, and John, 41, died from “intoxication by substance yet to be determined,” officials have since said.

There was no sign of violence found on the couple's bodies and it is estimated they had been dead for around 10 to 11 hours before they were found by police.

They were pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement, he went onto say that the hotel staff doesn't initially "believe that the cause of death was related to any issues with the hotel's infrastructure or facilities, including carbon monoxide or a gas of any kind" after friends of the couple raised concerns about ventilation.

"We will continue to cooperate with authorities as they look into the cause of this terrible tragedy. The safety and security of our guests and colleagues is always a top priority.

In a fundraiser started to help bring Abby's body home and pay for her funeral, a friend said "Abby and her boyfriend thought they had food poisoning and went to the hospital to get treatment".

Gabrielle Slate wrote: "We were told they were feeling much better a few days later. We received a phone call saying that they had passed away peacefully in their hotel room in their sleep.

"Abby was supposed to meet up with her dad this week for Father’s Day and all of this is completely unexpected. We are trying to get Abby home to us so we can have the funeral she deserves. Our family would be so grateful for any help. Abby was the most beautiful soul and we will miss her so much."

The family of Abby said in a statement to ABC news: "We are shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of our beloved Abby. Abby had an adventurous spirit and a wonderfully kind heart. She loved to travel, see new places, and share her zeal for life with those around her. We ask for your thoughts and prayers for our family during this very difficult time."
