Former Netherlands international Quincy Promes has been sentenced to 18 months in prison after being found guilty of assault.

Promes, 31, was arrested in December 2020 for allegedly stabbing his cousin. He was also accused of attempted murder or manslaughter, but the Dutch court has rejected this claim. He must pay €7,000 (around £6,000) to the victim in compensation.

The alleged attack happened in July 2020. Promes denied the accusation, but there was enough evidence to find him guilty. Testimonies from two eyewitnesses and the victim, as well as messages and intercepted conversations, proved to be sufficient evidence.

The forward's custodial sentence comes just three months after Dutch prosecutors confirmed he was being prosecuted for an alleged involvement in drugs trafficking. News of his sentence for the attack was reported by ESPN in the Netherlands on Monday.

The court was shown messages from Promes claiming he wanted to stab the victim in the neck. Yet no eyewitness saw the footballer aiming for his cousin's vital organs during the attack. Promes has the option to appeal against his sentence.

Promes was not in court when his conviction was made. He is currently in Russia, where he plays for Spartak Moscow, and it is unclear whether he will return to the Netherlands to face the music. He still has a year left on his current contract.

The judge declared the player's sentence would've been reduced to 12 months if he attended the hearing or showed remorse the alleged incident, which happened at a warehouse just outside of Amsterdam. It's believed it happened during a family party.

Promes came through the ranks at Twente and made his Eredivisie debut in April 2012. After a successful loan spell with second tier side Go Ahead Eagles, he scored 11 league goals for Twente during the 2013/14 campaign to earn a move to Spartak.

Promes joined Sevilla in August 2018 but returned to the Netherlands to play for Ajax a year later. He spent 18 months for playing for the Dutch outfit before starting his second spell with Spartak, scoring 20 league goals during the most recent campaign.

His international career came to an end after Dutch prosecutors confirmed he would face a criminal trial for the alleged stabbing in November 2021. Promes was a regular for the Netherlands until that point, earning 50 senior caps and playing at Euro 2020.

Promes was recently named as the Russian Premier League's Fans' Player of the Year and won the division's Golden Boot award five years ago. He has also won the Russian Premier League, Russian Cup, Russian Super Cup and Dutch Super Cup.
