The smiling mum-of-three gave the smitten youngsters high-fives as they spoke about their feelings at St John's CE Primary School in Bethnal Green, East London, for her Shaping Us campaign.

One girl told the princess: "I like my friend Miley.

"When I cry, she gets a tissue and wipes my tears."

Kate, in a green blouse replied: "That is the kind of friend… we all have feelings don't we?

"Good feelings and sad feelings.

"But if we've got our friends around us and our family, it makes us feel better, doesn't it?

"Does it make you feel better when you talk about your feelings?"

The princess also asked the children about the teddies they were holding.

Kate replied: "I should have brought my teddy with me, shouldn't I?"

She then played a claymation film depicting the first five years of a girl called Layla - used to explain her campaign.

Referring to a scene in which Layla drops an ice-cream, Kate, who was holding a Mr Tumble plush toy belonging to one of the children, asked: "Have any of you dropped on ice cream before like that?

"Have you? I have done too."

One boy recounted how he also dropped his ice-cream but was given another one, with a smiling Kate remarking: "Oh did you? You lucky… ah delicious."

The princess said the animation shows "how important it is to look after you, give you love, give you kindness, so you can be the best you can be."

Kate also chatted to another boy about his Spider-Man birthday cake, patting his back and giving him a big smile as he told her he loves the superhero.

One girl thanked Kate for visiting, saying: "Thank you for being here."

The princess replied, before giving the children high-fives: "Well thank you for letting me be here and for inviting me here."

On Monday, Kate kicked off her new Shaping Us initiative, at BAFTA in London, with stars such as Rochelle Humes, Fearne Cotton and Professor Green.

Then on Tuesday, she greeted adoring crowds at Kirkgate Market, in Leeds, and attended a second-year lecture in the 'Psychological Approaches to Understanding and Supporting Children's Learning' module, which examines children's learning and development, including attachment theory.
