Ah, dry shampoo. It's the holy grail product for many people when you've not got round to washing your hair yet, breathing a new lease of life into your otherwise dulling locks.
It can be a saviour when you've had an unexpectedly busy day and haven't had a chance to hop in the shower, and can make your hair look like you've spent hours styling it.
But one trichologist has warned about the downsides of dry shampoo, saying that "overreliance" on the product is not a good thing.
The trichologist posted on @truahair_'s TikTok, captioning the video: "Let's talk about dry shampoo."
She shared that "none of you are using it correctly", notifying people that it should only be used in a "break glass unit" scenario when you're absolutely desperate to give your hair some life.
Make 2023 your most productive year yet by using the 'intention' method"It's fantastic, and it's needed from time to time, but if you think about all the natural stuff that you secrete from the body like dead skin cells, sweat, oil, dry scalp, dandruff, all the pollution, the dust from your house, the deodorant that you spray under your armpit", she said.
"There's all sorts on your scalp, then you pop a load of dry shampoo on top of that, and that's fine if you're going to wash it out that night, but it shouldn't be used as a tool to not allow your scalp to get oily. Your scalp has to get oily to be able to grow hair."
She then recommended using dry shampoos that are more "natural based" if you can, saying others can "play havoc with the scalp", and saying hair may be "weaker" when it grows if you constantly rely on the product.
The trichologist also claimed that the "overreliance" on dry shampoo is a big cause of hair loss in teens and women in their early 20s, and she said you need to be "really really careful" and ensure you wash it out that night.
The Hair Club said: "Dry shampoos are not meant to replace regular shampooing, and overuse could result in hair loss and inhibit hair growth."
Someone commented on the TikTok, writing: "Omg!! I put dry shampoo in my freshly washed hair to stop it from getting greasy."
