A child has died and a man was taken to hospital in a serious condition after a house fire.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in Swansea, Wales, at 1.20pm yesterday.

There were four people in the house, the child that died, a woman and another child who suffered smoke inhalation and the man who is a serious condition in Morriston Hospital.

It's not yet known what caused the fire, which was contained to one property.

A joint investigation is being carried out by police and the fire service, Wales Online reports

“Of the three others who were in the house at the time, one child and woman suffered smoke inhalation, and one man is in a serious condition in Morriston Hospital. An investigation is being carried out to establish the exact circumstances of the fire.

"We wish to thank members of the community who helped at the scene and those who have come forward with information."

The Swansea blaze comes just two days after another fatal fire in Cambridge that left three people dead.

A woman and two children died in King’s Hedges ward, Cambridge, after a fire started at a two-storey maisonette shortly after 1am on Friday morning.

A young boy, aged four, and a girl, aged eight, were rescued by firefighters and rushed to hospital but could not be saved.

A woman in her 30s was pronounced dead at the scene. One man, also in his 30s, escaped from the building but suffered serious injuries and was fighting for his life in hospital.

An investigation is now underway to establish the circumstances that lead to the fire.

Area Commander Stuart Smith said: "This is a devastating and deeply upsetting incident that will touch many people. Our thoughts are with the relatives, friends and neighbours of the family. It’s just heartbreaking."
