Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from this year's Wimbledon through injury - a year since reaching the final and letting rip in front of the Royal Family on Centre Court.

The 28-year-old released a statement on his Instagram account confirming that he would not feature in the tournament, hours before the start of the third Grand Slam of the season.

He said: "Hey everyone. I'm really sad to say that I have to withdraw from Wimbledon this year. I have tried my hardest to be ready after surgery and to be able to step on the Wimbledon courts again.

"During my comeback, I experienced some pain in my wrist during the week of Mallorca. As a precaution I had it scanned and it came back showing a torn ligament in my wrist.

"I tried everything to be able to play and I am disappointed to say that I just didn't have enough time to manage it before Wimbledon. I'll be back, and as always, I appreciate the support from all my fans."

It means there will be no repeat of a second-place finish for Australian Kyrgios this time around, having fell to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 defeat to Novak Djokovic in 2022. Kyrgios was superb throughout the tournament and came agonisingly close to winning his first Grand Slam singles title.

However, during the final against Djokovic, Kyrgios was handed a fine after shouting in front of the watching Royals, including eight-year-old Prince George. The incident occurred in the third set, where Kyrgios felt unhappy with one spectator inside Centre Court, after they yelled out before one of his serves.

Krygios requested that the female spectator should be escorted from Centre Court. "The one with the dress, the one who looks like she's had about 700 drinks, bro!" he told the umpire.

"You didn't believe me!" Kyrgios also said. "It shouldn't be coming down to your opinion, she is distracting me when I'm serving in a Wimbledon final.

"There is no bigger occasion, you didn't believe me and she did it again, and it nearly cost me the game. Why is she still here? She is drunk out of her mind in the first row speaking in the middle of the game! What is acceptable?"

Krygios was later fined $4,000 for an audible obscenity in front of royalty. Having took some time away from the game after the tournament, Krygios was back at the US Open in the final Grand Slam of the year and managed to reach the quarter-finals before losing out to Karen Khachanov.

The news of Krygios' absence from Wimbledon this year may not be a huge surprise to some people after the Canberra-born tennis star missed the Australian Open and French Open through injury, too. Krygios will now be hoping to recover and feature at the US Open in September.
