One of the best ways is using bicarbonate of soda, according to gurus at hygiene firm Gtech.

It is ideal for scrubbing away stubborn stains and wiping out musty pet odours.

Packets of the powder can cost as little as 59p in supermarkets.

Some 34 per cent of UK families are thought to own a dog, with 28 per cent having cats.

Among the necessities when cleaning up after them are quick instincts, Gtech specialists said.

They said: "Acting fast is essential when removing pet stains, and you should start cleaning as soon as you spot it.

"For liquid stains such as urine, start by spraying the stain with cold water and then absorbing the liquid with paper towels or a cloth.

"Then sprinkle the affected area with bicarbonate of soda, leaving for at least an hour. Once it’s soaked in, vacuum the carpet, and repeat until the stain and odours have gone.

"Give the area an additional few rounds of spot cleaning if necessary but try not to rub your carpet fibres too much as this could damage the finish."

Bicarbonate of soda can also come in handy when tackling mud stains too, they added.

The product, also known as baking soda, is more commonly used as a leavening agent in baking.

Yet other handy uses for bicarbonate of soda include eliminating foul odours, whitening teeth, seeing off pests and getting rid of weeds.

It can also be used to clean dirty mattresses and polish tarnished jewellery, and even works to get the kitchen sink sparkling.
