Elton John didn't hang around after his Glastonbury set, according to reports.

The music icon, 76, wowed fans with his legendary performance on the Pyramid stage on Sunday, which included rousing renditions of his greatest hits.

The star's set is sure to go down in history as one of his best, but after belting out the final note of Rocket Man, Elton allegedly jumped in a golf buggy and hot-footed it home.

Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning Colin Paterson, said: "He [Elton] hit the last note of Rocket Man, jumped in a golf cart with a giant E on it, drove down where an automobile was waiting for him and was whisked to the red gate where there was a helicopter.

"Aviation nerds tracked that helicopter...it took him 39 minutes to get home to Windsor - the queues for the showers at Glastonbury are longer!"

The father-of-two's final performance at the annual festival more than lived up to the hype.

Elton kicked things off with Pinball Wizard, sporting a fabulous gold blazer as he sat as his piano.

Fireworks filled the air before the artist paid an emotional tribute to his late friend George Michael, who died in 2016.

The Cold Heart singer teased four stars would sing with him on the Pyramid Stage and was joined by Rina Sawayama, The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers, Jacob Lusk of Gabriels and The London Community Gospel Choir and Stephen Sanchez.

As he took in the rapturous response from his legion of loyal fans, an emotional Elton said: "You make me feel so happy. I want to thank you for 52 years of amazing love and loyalty that you have shown me.

"It’s be an immense journey. I have had the best time, I will never forget you. You are in my head, my heart, and my soul. You have been amazing, an incredible crowd tonight. Thank you so much Glastonbury, thank you so much England. I wish you so much health and happiness."

Fans were crying with emotion as they made their way back to their tents at Glastonbury, with one festival goer telling the Mirror: "It’s the end of an era - best act ever!"

Meanwhile a viewer watching at home tweeted: "#EltonJohn walks onto stage like the mid-70s man he is - and then strikes up on the piano with all the energy of a man in his mid 20s. He’s a bloody legend. #Glastonbury - Amazing."
