In fact, Kit Kats were actually invented by British company Rowntree's, and were first sold under the name Rowntree's Chocolate Crisp.
Two years later, in 1937, it was renamed the Kit Kat Chocolate Crisp, before becoming just Kit Kat after the Second World War.

According to historians, numerous men who worked for Rowntree's attended London's Kit Cat Club - a venue frequented by mostly influential writers and politicians.
The club got its name from Christopher Catling, the owner of a pie shop in Shire Lane - where the club held its first meetings.
Catling is also said to have made meat pies for the club members, which he affectionately called Kit-Cats.
Rowntree's later included the Kit-Cat chocolate in a boxed assortment, and trademarked the name in 1911.
One of the first advertisements for Kit Kats featured an image of Catling.
