I was a Malia club rep - what Brits abroad really get up to on holiday

FROM hosting booze cruises, organising bar crawls to dealing with noise complaints, every day is different in the life of a holiday rep - and it's certainly not for the faint-hearted.

However, it's a role Lucy Appleton, 25, can't recommend enough for those looking to get paid to have a good time and party.

Lucy - an influencer and holiday rep originally from Selby, North Yorkshire - says: "Of course there's sex, booze and drugs on a party holiday, however most younger people want more of an experience, rather than just getting drunk.

"We worked 60 hours a week, but who doesn't want to get paid to host a boat party, while working in the sun with the beach on your door step?"

'I've always been a party girl'

Lucy started doing summer seasons abroad in 2017, when she was 18, after going on her first girls holiday abroad the year before.

She says: "I've always been a party girl so it was just the perfect job for me, and my degree was also events management so it was perfect experience.

"When I got the news that I was successful and that I would be having Malia as my destination, I was over the moon!"

Drinking and dancing

Lucy went on to work in Malia for four summers, as a hotel and airport rep, bar staff and club door girl, before starring in ITV's Kavos Weekender last year.

She says: "As a hotel rep I would pick up arrivals, do welcome meetings, sell trips, do hotel visits, deal with complaints.

"I'd also host events such as boat parties, beach parties, paint parties and bar crawls.

"It was an amazing experience."

Brits abroad

It would be fair to say young Brits abroad on party holidays often have a bit of a nightmare rep for boozing and bad behaviour.

However, Lucy insists for the most part, business owners on the party strips love foreign tourists.

She says: "In Malia, the locals loved the Brits because they come and spend money.

Without. the party tourists places like Kavos, Malia and Zante wouldn't survive.

"The club owners want them to come and visit their resorts."

Bad behaviour

However, Lucy admits there was, of course, some bad behaviour.

She says: "Most people were just out there to have fun, party and make memories.

"With the younger party guests, I definitely had to deal with noise complaints from hotel owners and even had to kick someone out of a hotel at one time.

"There was one night an England game was on and we lost.

"I instantly had a gut feeling I'd be getting called up from hotel owners because of trouble - and I did.

"There had been fighting between some of my English guests and Italian guests.

"The worst behaviour was actually couples getting into domestics."

Booze and s*** tattoos

It goes without saying Lucy saw a lot in her time as a rep.

She says: "I'd say 90 per cent of guests would always get a s*** tattoo and some of them were hilarious.

"One guest got his girlfriends Twitter handle on him, only for her to dump him a couple days later!"

"We had a game where couples would compete to be Mr and Mrs.

"These two people ( a boy and girl) were both in relationships, but wanted to play and planned to just stop playing when the game got too far.

"However they ended up winning the game and going round the corner to have sex after the game finished."

Perks of the job

The hours were long, but Lucy says the perks more than made up for it.

She says: "We worked 60 hours a week, but who doesn't want to get paid to host a boat party, while working in the sun with the beach on your door step?

"Also, the commission from sales was great, and you were partying with guests and making friends with them, while experiencing new places. 

"There is carnage out on the strip, but everyone is just there to have a good time."

Booze cruise

The booze cruises were Lucy's favourite work days.

She says: "The energy was always amazing as it was always the guests favourite activity.

"From belly flop competitions, dentist chair, lap dances, dance offs - they were crazy!

"In terms of drinks, Sex on the Beach and Headf***ers are the most popular, and some bars get you in with a 10 euro free bar for an hour."

Once a rep, always a rep

It's a way of life, and one Lucy doesn't plan to quit anytime soon.

She says: "This year I'm attending the Weekender experience holidays in Magaluf, Zante in Ibiza as a rep.

It's very similar to Kavos Weekender, just without the cameras.

"'Once a rep, always a rep' is a famous summer worker saying.

"It becomes addictive - I don't think I could ever really hang up my rep hat!"
