MOTORISTS have been warned over a "friendly" everyday driving habit that could cost them a fine of up to £1,000.

More than half of drivers on UK roads are unaware that flashing your lights to let other drivers know you are making way for them could result in a fine.

Rule 110 of the Highway Code states: "Only flash your headlights to let other road users know that you are there… Do not flash your headlights to convey any other message or intimidate other road users."

The RAC commented: “Headlight flashes should only be used to warn drivers of your presence on the road.

“Simply put, it’s open to misinterpretation (particularly as it means different things in other countries), so think carefully before you reach for the beams.”

Also, flashing your headlights can be used to signal to other drivers that there's a police speed trap ahead.

If you are found to have warned other motorists in this way, then you could receive a fine of up to £1,000.

Other habits that could land drivers in hot water include beeping your horn in anger or pulling over to use a mobile phone with the engine still running.

This comes after drivers were warned that parking under a tree could end up costing them a £1,000 fine.

Plus, drivers were warned that getting behind the wheel in bright or dark conditions could cost them an unlimited fine.
