A MAN has died after plunging into the moat of one of Britain's biggest castles while out walking.

The 82-year-old could not be revived after being pulled from the water at Caerphilly Castle - which has featured in Doctor Who - in Wales.

Emergency services rushed to the scene just before 8pm last night amid reports of a man in distress.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and the man's family have been informed, cops confirmed.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

The castle site is situated on 30 acres, making it the second largest in Britain behind Windsor Castle.

It was used several times as a filming location for Doctor Who since the show's revival in 2005.

The castle was built by Gilbert de Clare in the 13th Century to maintain control of Glamorgan, the area which now forms much of modern-day Wales.

It is currently in the middle of a £5million restoration under the management of Cadw, the Welsh heritage organisation.

Gwent Police have been contacted for comment.
