A body has been found after a two-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped after the girl's mum was attacked, say reports.
Cops in Michigan, US, say Rashard Trice, 26, made off with the two-year-old girl, Wynter Smith, after assaulting the girl's mother, his ex-girlfriend.
He fled the scene on Sunday night before being arrested early morning Monday in the city of St. Clair Shores, 90 miles east. But the two-year old was nowhere to be seen, according to authorities.
Police said that they spotted Trice while driving and he tried to speed away, but he crashed into an emergency patrol vehicle, injuring an officer.
Now it has been reported that officers have made the grim discovery of a child's body believed to be missing Wynter Smith.
Two New York cops stabbed during celebrations in Times SquareThe Detroit News reports that two police sources have said that a body thought to be the missing two-year-old girl had been found on Wednesday.
The body was said by a source to have been discovered in a field near Marcus and Erwin on Detroit's east side in the Police Department's Seventh Precinct.
The discovery has not yet been confirmed by officials.
Wynter had been reported missing on July 2 at about 11:30pm. Police did not name Wynter’s mother, only describing her as a 22-year-old, but said she was in stable condition at a hospital.
Trice is the ex-boyfriend of Wynter's mother but is not her father. He was arrested after he allegedly took Wynter and stabbed and physically assaulted her mother who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police allege Trice fled in the injured mother's car and reached speeds of 100 miles an hour during a chase. Authorities said Trice was arrested in St Clair Shores, at around 5.50am Monday morning.
Officers previously highlighted a route stretching from I-96 in the Lansing area east to I-94 in the Detroit area they were searching.
Lansing Police said earlier: “If you are driving on this route tomorrow, we ask you to watch out for anything unusual along the way that could possibly lead us to Wynter...even if it seems minor or inconsequential.”
“Wynter, along with her 1-year-old brother, was in their apartment when her mother was assaulted by an ex-boyfriend,” the FBI said. “Following the assault, Wynter’s mother fled the apartment and called law enforcement authorities.”
The younger brother was unharmed, they said.
