Multiple people needed treatment after inhaling an unknown substance sprayed by a man with a canister during an argument at a KFC.

The man in question pulled a canister from his bag and sprayed the unidentified substance directly at the victim after a row erupted inside the Colne Road KFC branch in Burnley on Friday afternoon, police said.

Lancaster Live reports that bystanders who inhaled the substance required treatment from paramedics, with some hospitalised as they suffered problems including breathing difficulties.

Officers were called to the scene at around 4pm and put road closures in place while the incident was investigated.

A police spokesperson said they do not currently know what the substance in the canister was.

The spokesperson said: "We were called shortly before 4 pm to the KFC on Colne Road after a man pulled a canister from a bag and sprayed another man who he had been arguing with.''

The offender and victim left the scene but a number of people in the area suffered symptoms including difficulty breathing and were either assessed at the scene by ambulance staff or were taken to hospital.

The spokesperson added: “Fortunately, no-one appears to have suffered any lasting effects.”

The exact nature of the substance remains unknown.
