RANGERS have had a bid for Swansea winger Morgan Whittaker knocked back.

The Ibrox side tabled a £900,000 offer for the highly-rated 22-year-old.

But, SunSport understands the Welsh outfit want at least £2 million for Whittaker.

The attacker has no shortage of suitors south of the border after a stunning first half of the season at Plymouth.

Swansea recalled him early from his loan with Plymouth where he scored nine times and weighed in with seven assists.

However, they want to cash in now while his stock is high to help fund the purchase of other targets.

Whittaker plays predominantly on the right flank but is also effective  through the middle and on the left.

Right wing has long been a problem for the Ibrox outfit in recent seasons.

And Michael Beale has made it a priority to fill the position with a quality performer in his first transfer window.

But, Rangers will have to significantly increase their offer if they want to land Whittaker this month.

Swansea boss Russell Martin has made it clear he will not risk picking the player after he was recalled from Plymouth.

If Whittaker does make an appearance for the Championship side then he would be ineligible to play for any other club this term apart from the Pilgrims.

Asked about the Gers offer Martin said: "I think it's quite some way short at the moment.

"With that in mind, Morgan is probably not going to be involved.

“We had a good chat and with that looming over his head, we need to see where that's going to go."

Whittaker spent the second half of the last campaign on loan at Lincoln City where he scored five times in 20 games.

His form there encouraged Plymouth to take the chance on him this season. In addition to his goals for the Pilgrims he picked up a player of the month award in League One back in September.

He also has caps at youth international level for England at every age group from Under-16 to Under-20.
