Dog walkers and residents are being issued with an urgent warning after fears carrots laced with poison are being left in a popular park.

A number of dogs have become ill after visiting Warwick Park in Kibworth, Leicestershire, raising concerns among locals on a Facebook group.

They claim that a number of pets have been taken ill after going for a walk in the park, specifically near the pond on an area of green space, LeicestershireLive reports.

One concerned pet owner even said he was left with a £400 vet bill.

The area of the park is home to wild rabbits. Residents claimed they had seen a number of dead rabbits near the pond, leading them to believe someone could be deliberately targeting them and then pets being caught out.

Kibworth Beauchamp Parish Council inspected the area and said it found no evidence of poison-laced carrots but it is now monitoring the park. A spokeswoman for the parish council confirmed it had received a report of the issue by a local dog walker.

She said: "We've had a look around and couldn't see anything. But we're going to monitor the park and a grounds person with check again."

Meanwhile, residents have been asked to "be careful" when walking their dogs. Pet owners are urged not to let them eat anything in the area surrounding the pond.
