A stark warning has been issued over a recent TikTok trend involving 'exploding eggs'.

The trend involves microwaving hard boiled eggs then cutting into them to watch as the scalding hot yoke bursts in a cloud of steam and explodes across the kitchen. Countless TikTok creators have gone viral posting the videos, but doctors have warned the trend could post a health risk and even cause blindness.

The hot steam shooting out of the eggs could cause serious injuries with Dr Grace Wang, an ophthalmologist at the University of Michigan, pleading with people not to try the trend and saying it isn't "worth it." Dr Wang said: "You can get a lot of painful injuries that could alter your face, your appearance and your vision.

"The hot steam and the hot egg along with the force of the explosion can really hit you in the face and cause burns, and not just to your skin. It can burn your eyes and cause injuries."

The damage to your eyes might not be temporary either. Scarring could cause long-term issues with your sight and the ability of your cells to repair tissue in the front of the eyes could be harmed, warned Dr Wang.

Pharmacist Thorrun Govind said burns and damage only your eyes is not something that can be easily repaired. She said: "I think it is extremely concerning that people are considering doing this.

"This could cause really serious harm, which ultimately you may even need surgery for."

While the warnings may seem overly dramatic to some, a quick scroll through TikTok will show why they've been given. One user, Abbie Sloan, has more than 300,000 views on her video which shows a woman jumping back in shock as her boiled egg exploded with a plume of steam across the plate.

The woman told viewers to "take it out of the bowl" of water and "cut the egg in the middle" before it burst. However, Abbie's views pale in comparison to some other videos posted online.

One video racked up a whopping 7.5 million views. Posted by the H.G.bros duo, the pair are seen tentatively poking a boiled egg with a knife before it bursts dramatically across their kitchen.

Another video shows Jess from samandjessofficial pranking her husband into cutting open a boiled egg she had microwaved. The eggs explodes into tiny pieces which then spray everywhere.

One clip has garnered an incredible 51.8 million views, showing a young girl biting into a microwave-boiled egg, only to have the hot yolk explode into the back of her throat. It's captioned: "Don't boil your eggs in the microwave."

The warnings come after Shafia Bashir suffered horrific burns across her face that left her skin peeling off after boiling an egg in the microwave. She cut into the molten yolk with a cold spoon, only to have it erupt across the right side of her face like a fountain.

When contacted for comment, TikTok shared their community guidelines that states: "Content is age-restricted if it shows activities that are likely to be imitated and may lead to any physical harm.

"Content is ineligible for the FYF if it involves activities that are likely to lead to moderate physical harm, or includes professionals who are performing extreme sports and stunts that may endanger others."
