At least 36 pages of background briefings show the bank went to huge lengths to find reasons to cut off his account - trying to link him to Russia and climate change denial.

Mr Farage said: “The decision to close me down was made at a meeting on November 17th last year on the wealth reputational risk committee.

“They decided once the small mortgage I had with them expired in 2023 they would get rid of me — even though I met the financial criteria.”

The bank had even recently downgraded him from a “higher risk politically exposed person” to a lower risk.

Coutts said: “Decisions to close accounts are not taken lightly and take into account factors including commercial viability, reputational considerations, legal and regulatory requirements.”

Mr Farage accused the bank of moving towards a “China-style social credit system where our freedoms are gone”.
