The Hairy Bikers have announced they are taking a “well-earned” break after a “busy year” which saw Dave Myers diagnosed with cancer.

Dave, 65, is one half of the Hairy Bikers along with TV sidekick and close pal Si King, 56. After taking some time off in 2022 to have treatment, Dave revealed his health is now “going the right way” following a gruelling 30 rounds of chemotherapy. Although he is still having treatment, he said doctors think a further round of radiotherapy will rid him of his remaining cancer. He has also continued to work, filming TV shows and recording his regular Agony Uncles podcast with Si.

But as the pair get ready to film their next TV show, an eight-part BBC Two travel series which will take them from Scotland to Devon called Hairy Bikers Go West, the pair shared the news they will soon be taking some time off to regroup. Taking to Instagram, they told their 264,000 followers: “Those hardworking Agony Uncles are taking a well-earned break which gives us the chance to look back on a busy year of problem-solving."

The duo continued: “In this Best Of Confidential Corner, Uncle Si, Uncle Dave & Posh Tash tackle troubles including The Recipe Of Love, Swinging Mum And Dad, a case of the Pinot Piles and the toe-curler that is Caught In The Act.” Signing off, they added: “Listen to this week’s best of through all the streaming services!”

Dave has never specified what type of cancer he has but went public with his diagnosis in May 2022. At times during his treatment, he has been too ill to walk, unable to ride his motorcycle due to being unsteady and his hair fell out, along with his eyelashes.

But he told The Times his hair, which has since grown back, is now "better than it was before chemo”. Giving a recent health update, he added: “I’m doing all right. It’s a work in progress. We’ve had some hard years but this one’s been… I’ve had 30 lots of chemo, spread over three weeks and then a week off. It’s going the right way.”

Close pal and colleague Si, who Dave first met in 1992, shared it is “very difficult to verbalise” his distress at talking about his friend’s condition. He said: “There’s a sense of loss, but there’s also that sense of hope, you know, knowing my mate as I do. He’s a scrapper. He’s a fighter. But there were certain points that I thought, ‘Where’s it going to go? What is happening to my friend?'”

In recent months, Dave has had to learn to walk and ride his bike again after chemo left him unable to move. The star has hailed being back on his beloved bike as a milestone moment in his recovery.

He said: “It’s been hard but I’m not the only one and I’m getting through it and I’m back at work. I’ve had to learn to walk again and ride my bike again, and to get on my bike again with Kingy in the sunshine brought tears to both our eyes.”
