A 13-year-old girl topped 100mph during a police car chase while she had an 11-year-old passenger.
The teenager from Colorado and her passenger were taken into protective custody after the pursuit through central Nebraska on Monday, which lasted around 15 minutes, state troopers said.
Officers eventually managed to stop the children as they travelled along an interstate highway.
A Nebraska state trooper noticed a Nissan Pathfinder travelling east at around 35 miles per hour shortly after 9.30pm on Monday and attempted to initiate a traffic stop near the city of Kearney.
The Pathfinder then allegedly sped up in an attempt to flee the scene.
Gangsters ‘call for ceasefire’ after deadly Christmas Eve pub shootingFollowing the high-speed chase, another trooper was able to perform a tactical manoeuvre which forced the Pathfinder to stop, with the occupants taken into custody “without further incident” according to state patrols.
"The vehicle reached speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour as it fled eastbound on I-80," Nebraska State Patrol said in quotes reported by CBS News.
"Another trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks at mile marker 288 to slow the vehicle. The suspect vehicle then exited I-80 at the Shelton interchange and began travelling northbound at slower speeds."
A firearm, a small amount of cannabis and drug paraphernalia were reportedly found inside the car.
The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles states that prospective drivers are not allowed to apply for a learner's permit until at least 60 days before their 15th birthday.
Learner's permit holders are not permitted to get behind the wheel without a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old.
Similar rules apply in Colorado, where teenagers can obtain a permit at about 15 years old and must be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21 for one year before becoming eligible for a license.
