Your birthday is one of the few days of the year when you're allowed to be a little bit selfish and do the things that you want to do - whether that's throwing a party or staying at home.

But one woman has been left furious after her mum deliberately ignored her request not to have any cake at her birthday party, in favour of making her guests happy instead.

The woman explained she's currently pregnant and has gestational diabetes, so has been watching her sugar levels closely and has been maintaining a strict diet to "keep her baby safe".

So when her mum asked what kind of birthday cake she'd like, the woman said she would rather have a cheese board or a bowl of strawberries and cream instead, as she wouldn't be able to eat any cake.

However, when she arrived at her birthday party, she discovered her mum had made sugar-loaded cupcakes and had failed to bring anything that the woman could actually eat - so she walked out.

In a post on Reddit, she said: "I'm pregnant with my second child and have gestational diabetes and have been observing a pretty strict diet to keep my baby safe.

"Anyway, it was my birthday a few days before Christmas. My mum is a really good cook and baker and it's a tradition that she asks us what cake we want on our birthday. I said I'm diabetic so please can I have one of those cheese boards that looks like a cake instead. She said 'people want something sweet', so I suggested strawberries and whipped cream which I can eat.

"At my party, she pulls out sugary cupcakes.

"Normally I try to just suck it up and try not to be the annoying person that tries to make everyone else suffer for my diet. In fact, I'd quietly just not eaten anything that wasn't suitable for the rest of the party and been really accepting of the fact that everyone else was getting drunk when I obviously can't.

"This was just too much for me though. So when the cupcakes were served, I quietly went and sat in the other room. My husband came and found me and sat with me."

Although she didn't leave the party completely, the woman's mum was furious with her and claimed it was "embarrassing" that she left the room right as her guests were getting ready to sing Happy Birthday to her.

She added: "Mum is now upset and says it was embarrassing that they were going to sing Happy Birthday and I wasn't there. I know it was immature but I'm grumpy and pregnant and also I have a Christmas birthday so already have a few hang-ups about my birthday getting lost."

In an edit, the woman also added that her mum didn't prepare the cheese board or strawberries she asked for in addition to the cakes, but instead ignored her wishes and only brought the cupcakes.

Commenters on the post were firmly on the woman's side, with many saying her mum was acting selfishly by ignoring her daughter's wishes on her birthday.

One person said: "Since she specifically asked you what you wanted and then ignored your wishes (for your own birthday cake), I get why you're grumpy and it's clear that's not what you're doing here. You deserved to take a moment after feeling ignored and like your needs weren't met."

While another added: "You acted calmly and your mum didn't take your dietary needs into consideration even after being discussed."

And a third wrote: "Asking what someone wants, just so you can reject what they say and make what you think they should have instead, is a total d**k move."
