A NATIONAL champion junior wrestler has died aged just 16.

Tunisian rising star Hadeel Kohouli tragically drowned in a heartbreaking accident off the north-west coast.

It is understood Kohouli was on a sea voyage when the tragedy unfolded with her body found during a search operation near Tabarka.

The Tunisian Wrestling Federation confirmed the sad news this morning.

They said: "With all the meanings of sorrow and heartbreak, we learned today the news of the death of the champion of the national youth team and the wrestler of the Mostaqbal Club, the honourable daughter of Tunisia, Hadeel Kohouli.

"On this painful occasion, the Tunisian Wrestling Federation extends its deepest condolences."

Kohouli was part of the Tunisian junior national team and wrestled for the Mostaqbal Al-Reqab club in Sidi Bouzid.

She had won bronze at the latest African Championships.

The event was hosted in Hammamet, Tunisia - with Kohouli producing on home soil.

She competed in the Under-17s women's freestyle category.

Kohouli was one of 25 Tunisian medalists in the U-17s.

The talented teenager came third in the 69kg event.

Joseth Sasa Mavungu of Angola took gold, while Algeria's Yasmine Bouregba earned silver.
