Canelo Alvarez has told Jake Paul that he should "calm down" after repeating his claims that he will eventually fight the pound-for-pound great later this year.

The YouTube star has made no secret of his ambitions to become a world champion in boxing after turning professional with just one white collar bout to his name in 2020. He is 7-1 as a professional and returned to winning ways against MMA legend Nate Diaz earlier this month after suffering his first defeat to Tommy Fury in February.

After his win over Diaz, Paul reiterated his insistence that he would fight Alvarez, who is the undisputed super-middleweight champion and has previously held gold at light-heavyweight. Paul has even vowed to make a brutal cut to 175lb in order to face the pound-for-pound great, declaring that he will be able to be competitive against him within a few years.

But speaking with Mirror Fighting in New York on Tuesday, Alvarez explained that he feels Paul needs to slow his role, saying: "My level is another level. But look, I think he needs to enjoy what he's doing and that's it, he needs to calm down and start calling out people at other levels."

However, the boxing great does appreciate what he is doing for the sport in attracting a new audience who initially followed his social media career before making the switch. Alvarez feels that he is making positive moves, but wants to err on the side of caution when it comes to calling for bigger challenges.

"I think he needs to focus on what he is doing," the undisputed champion added. "He's doing good things, [fights with the likes of Nate Diaz], he needs to just enjoy that."

Paul was distancing himself from the world of YouTube rivals such as KSI during an appearance on his brother Logan's podcast last week when he claimed that within three years he could fight the boxing icon. After co-host Mike Majlak pressed him on the claim given his lack of wins over legitimate boxers, the 26-year-old responded that he would eventually reach that level.

“I’m predicting what’s going to happen 3 more years from now," he explained. "So I’m going to get to his skill level and beat him. I have one of the greatest self-belief systems in the world and I know what I’m capable of with this new team. I can give Canelo a serious run for his money.”

It came after he dismissed the possibility of a fight with Conor McGregor at his post-fight press conference following the Diaz bout when he told reporters "I don't care about that guy... I want Nate in MMA, I want more professional boxers and I want Canelo."
