A Jaffa Cake is a staple treat in many British homes. Many may disagree on whether it's a biscuit or a cake, but most can safely say that it's delicious.

One Jaffa Cake fan has taken his obsession to a whole new level after smashing a 'world record' by scoffing 102 Jaffa Cakes in just three minutes during an eating competition.

The British Eating League Jaffa Cakes challenge took place at The George Pub & Grill in Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham.

Max Stanford, also known as 'Max vs Food', beat his own personal best of 88, which he set last year.

In order to complete his sugary feat, the charity worker from Brixton, south west London, gobbled two of the chocolate-covered treats at a time, and washed them down with pints of warm water.

The eating challenge saw the 35-year-old easily beat 'Food and the Beast', who managed a total of 66 Jaffa Cakes. 'Kyle V Food' came in fourth place with 64, and 'Tunnysvsfood' managed 50.

Just one Jaffa Cake, which consists of a sponge layer topped with orange flavoured jam and a coating of chocolate, is 46 calories. In just three minutes Max polished off a belly-busting 4,692 calories, which is more just under double the recommended daily calorie intake for men.

Max is a competitive eater with his own YouTube channel who is currently ranked number one by the British Eating League. This latest victory comes hot off the heels off his previous win, where he ate a jaw-dropping 1kg of Frosties in just six minutes.

Max said: "It went very, very well, I surprised myself. I beat my record from last year of 88.

"It wasn't too bad eating that many. My tactic was eating and then using a lot of water and getting into a rhythm.

"Live events are so much better. I did a lot better because of that, with people cheering and you get to see the other competitors as well."

Max, who is a big Jaffa Cakes fan, has not been put off eating Jaffa Cakes after the eating challenge.

He said: "I really do like Jaffa Cakes. I've got some left over that I'll have with a cup of tea later."

Founder of British Eating League Craig Harker added: "What an event and what a start to the season with the first in-person eating contest."
