Shaun Wane says new assistant coach Lee Briers will add “attacking quality” to England - and make up for his thwarted Test opportunities as a player.

Ex-Warrington stand-off Briers, 45, has joined England’s staff for the three Test series with Tonga. After leaving his role on Wigan’s coaching team, he has been a big hit in the NRL this year. Briers, one of the most creative players of his generation, has helped Brisbane to second in the table and they now stand just 80 minutes from a first Grand Final since 2015.

Former Wales No6 Briers somehow only ever played once for Great Britain and England boss Wane said: “It didn't surprise me he’s done so well over there.

He's a very smart bloke and he keeps things simple. Brisbane are seeing the benefit of him. You can see the influence he has and they're going from strength to strength. He got underused internationally as a player and he'll bring a lot, no question.”

Briers will join ex-Castleford boss Andy Last who continues as Wane’s other assistant coach. Wane added: “Lee did a good job with us at Wigan and he went out there to test himself.

There was a chance it wouldn't work over there but he's made a success of it and Brisbane look like they're getting to a Grand Final. "And he'll have played a massive part. I know what his attacking prowess is; he'll bring that to England and the lads will love him.”
